Gonzaga Bulldogs 87
Texas Longhorns 77 Derek Ravio made seven 3-pointers en route to 27 points to lead Gonzaga past Texas 87-77 in the opening game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge. Jeremy Pargo added 18 points and Josh Heytvelt had 13 points and 11 rebounds in the Zags' balanced attack. "I thought for stretches of the game, both in the first half and the second half, we played some of the best basketball we've played this year," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. Texas was led by freshman star Kevin Durant with 29 points and nine rebounds. Fellow freshman Justin Mason added 17 points for the Longhorns. Durant did all he could to bring the Longhorns back from 19 down at the half. He showed his all-around skills in a six-point burst during a span of 1:09 in the second half with a jump hook, a 3-point basket and a drive that produced two free throws. The run cut the Zags' lead to 55-51 with 14:02 left in the game but that was as close as Texas would get. "There's not a better player in the country, Texas coach Rick Barnes said of his freshman star. ![]() |
